When it comes to viral marketing, there are several things that need to be considered in order to make it work. Three important things to look at in regards to a campaign is the messenger, the message, and the environment. There are three types of messengers that are needed: a market maven (information specialists; people on top of trends), social hubs (people with large social connections), and salespeople (individuals who make the message more relevant and interesting). The message has to be both memorable and sufficiently interesting for it to be passed around and reach viral status. It needs a “must-see” element that will motivate people to share it. The environment is crucial to the success of a campaign. The timing and context must be right in order for it to be successful.
Because social media is (probably) a huge part of most of our lives, viral marketing is going to likely be an simpler and more comfortable medium to use in our Project 3 remixes because it’s something we’re familiar with. If we choose to use a type of viral marketing as one or more of our genre remixes, knowing what to consider to make it a success should make it easier to do than just trying something and hoping for the best.
